I’m back from Seattle and Philadelphia, and to sum up: Seattle was beautiful and sunny and fifty degrees and the food omg the FOOD! Philadelphia was snow-covered and majestic and FREE BOOKS everywhere and yet so cold that I thought I was going to die. Seriously, I’m tired of winter taking a little of the fun out of everything.
I met so many wonderful librarians and booksellers, and I found the World of Warcraft players and AD&D Second Edition fans among them. Really, there are few things more satisfying than confessing that you’re a gamer to a room full of strangers and then watching to see which ones light up and nod knowingly.
I also got to read an advance copy of E. Lockhart’s upcoming WE WERE LIARS after a dinner event we did together in Seattle. Great read, and writers especially should take note of this book. There’s a lot you can learn about structure and pacing. I read it through once, then went back and broke the plot down to see how Lockhart constructed her story. Elegant, well-planned, and she makes it look easy. It’s not. Look for WE WERE LIARS on May 13, 2014.
